What is the Binghamton Investment Fund?
The Binghamton Investment Fund, introduced during the 2016-2017 academic year, is a program in which students manage a diversified multi-class portfolio of $500,000. The program evolved from the Equity Valuation ("Trading Room") class, which originally received $100,000 in 2003 as a donation for the purpose of teaching students a practical investment skillset.
The current structure of the fund reflects that of a multi-class asset manager. The Fund is managed by a Board of Directors consisting of seniors that have held internships in front office finance and plan to work in the industry upon graduation.
The equities sleeve is managed by upperclassmen that have interned in front office finance who assume the role of Sector Heads and are supported by a group of underclassmen Senior and Junior Analysts in covering a specific sector of the S&P 500. These coverage teams are responsible for keeping up to date on the movements and trends within their industry. Coverage teams conduct fundamental equity research to pitch new investment ideas, as well as maintain coverage of current holdings.
The alternatives sleeve is managed by upperclassmen with previous experience analyzing fixed income, commodities, and other alternative assets. In addition to performing analysis on investment ideas, the team is responsible for originating macroeconomic research and viewpoints that are integrated across the equities sleeve.
The Binghamton University Investment Fund is the premier pipeline for front office finance recruiting at Binghamton University. By participating in the Fund, students will gain invaluable experience in following the markets and valuing assets. This gives students an edge in preparing for interviews and working on the job in front office finance. The goal of the Fund is to give students equity / credit research and practical investing experience that will help prepare them for a career in equity research, sales & trading, or investment banking.
This program also provides analysts with significant exposure to alumni, as recruiters will look to students who have been a part of the Binghamton Investment Fund as the most prepared students to enter the financial services industry.
Applications for Junior Analyst positions open up at the end of each semester. The application process consists of a resume submission, a brief stock pitch, and interviews with the current Sector Heads and Portfolio Managers.
